At freshStart, we depend completely on donations, be it new or pre-loved goods, time, creativity, or money.
freshStart is manned by unpaid volunteers and has only minimal, mandatory overheads. We are registered as a not-for-profit company, so cash donations are tax-deductible in South Africa.
All financial and item donations go to ensure that the Smutsville Recycle SwopShop is sustainable and always has items on offer that are needed by the children (toiletries, stationery, clothing, shoes and blankets) as well as aspirational items (toys, soccer balls, netballs, skateboards and dolls) and weekly fruit.
In 2018, we traded more than 18 000 items, that’s 590 per week!

Financial Donations
You can make a cash donation to freshStart directly into the bank, by EFT:

You can also make a cash donation to freshStart using BackaBuddy by clicking on the button and simply following the instructions. If you wish to donate using PayPal, please use this BackaBuddy option.
Donation of items
Collection bins for new or second hand goods are located in Sedgefield at:
- Dr Stander’s Rooms
- The EDGE Newspaper Office
- The Toy Shop at the PnP Centre
- and Slow Roasted at the Sedgefield Market.

Donation of time
If you would like to get involved with our project, join the family of freshStart volunteers. On a Wednesday afternoon, shop and play with the children, teach them some crafting skills, or read together.

Toiletries
toilet-paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, face cloth, soap (100g), deodorants
Stationery
pens, pencils (with/without erasers), rulers, eraser, sharpeners, crayons, pencil cases, glue sticks (small), small scissors, colouring books, exercise books
Children’s Clothing
any new or second hand clothes (good condition), shoes, sports togs, new underwear, new socks, fleece blankets
Toys
soft toys, dolls, small cars, games & puzzles, marbles, tops, 2nd hand bikes, skateboards, balls (football, rugby, netball, cricket, tennis), bats, beach toys
